WHAT WE HEAR

"I've always had a mental block with math and couldn't have done this without the tutor's hard work and effort. I have passed the PRAXIS exam!"

- adult tutoring student

"[Our son] is learning more this way than I feel he would be in a regular classroom. He is feeling more confident in his subjects. He goes to his tutoring without having to be dragged!"

- parent of snowboarding-school student

TTC Student Competes in US Open Snowboard Championships

Congratulations Chan!

TTC Postcard Adopted for National Adult Literacy Outreach Campaign

Nationally Adopted Support Literacy Postcard

TTC's distinctive "Thank You" postcard has been sent by TTC students over the past 3 years to supporters of adult education and literacy in Vermont to let them know that their support is important and appreciated by our adult learners. Now, the TTC postcard has been selected for a national adult literacy outreach effort. Versions of our postcard are being used from New Hampshire to California to say "Thank you" to supporters of adult literacy across America.

LuxBrush Painting & RK Miles Donate a Fresh Look for TTC Bennington

Things are looking brighter at TTC's learning center in Bennington courtesy of a generous donation of materials and painting skill provided by LuxBrush Painting Co. and RK Miles Lumber, both of Manchester Center, Vt.

A full crew of LuxBrush painters arrived at TTC on a quiet Saturday morning and proceded to clean, scrape, sand, and paint a major portion of the center's first floor, including the historic centerhall stairway.

Students and staff are still talking about the fresh TTC look. Thank you!

Dear Friends & Partners in Education,

The Tutorial Center skied some new slopes this winter, while continuing to excel at our fundamental mission. We're proud to share some of our Success Stories. You'll see it's been a very busy and productive winter!

In 2006 TTC provided 4,651 hours of tutoring for K-16 learners, in subjects spanning beginning reading to calculus - a 22% increase from 2005. Plus - over 12,000 hours of adult education!

And we're even busier this year! Call if you want to learn more about anything you read here.

TTC Partners in New Stratton Freestyle Academy

Students Kaitlyn Yakaitis & Brittany Loweree Advance to U.S. Freestyle Championships!

Ski School StudentsThis winter, TTC has again broken new educational ground: providing a comprehensive high school program for talented high school freestyle skiers who spend the winter training in Vermont as part of a new Stratton Freestyle Academy. These students - whose specialties are the energetic mogul and aerial events know as freestyle skiing - maintain a rigorous academic program at TTC that may include several Advanced Placement-level classes, while simultaneously training daily and competing in regional and national freestyle competitions with the goal of qualifying for the Junior Olympics and US Freestyle Championships. Four of this year's group qualified for the Junior Olympics, and Brittany Loweree and Kaitlyn Yakaitis are advancing to compete in the U.S. Freestyle Championships being held at Killington the week of March 22-25. Good luck Kaitlyn and Brittany!

New Digital Photography Workshops Cover the Basics and Beyond

"This is wonderful!" - photography workshop participant

Students at a Tutorial Center Digital Camera Workshop

TTC's new digital photography and imaging workshops have been playing to packed classes this winter at the TTC learning center on Richville Road in Manchester Center. Developed and taught by professional photographer and digital artist Christine Glade, recent workshops have spanned Introduction to Digital Photography basics up to the more challenging Intermediate Photoshop Elements. "Our goals are to help beginners build a comfort level with their digital cameras and its use but also to challenge more advanced photographers to explore and master the powerful modern hardware and software that can be used to produce top quality images," explains Glade.

A full schedule of workshops is currently being planned for spring and summer, including hardware and software skill classes, business applications such as newsletter photography, special topic sessions, and field excursions.

SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENT SUCCESS

Sarah Uses Bridge-to-College as Step to Better Career; Wins New AAUW Scholarship

Scholarship Recipient Sarah Richardson

In February, the Bennington branch of The American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded Bridge-to-College student Sarah Richardson a $600 scholarship towards further college study. Notably, this was the first college scholarship ever awarded by this organization, and was specifically targeted for non-traditional female college students. To anyone who knows Sarah, this award was well deserved and well invested.

Gaming Builds

Reading Comprehension

Student Game inspires creative learning

As a way to get students to "think beyond the page," TTC tutor Lark Fleming challenged Devin Cassan of Arlington and Tiffany Hewitt of Mill River to create board games based on the books and stories they were reading. "When designing a game," says Lark, "the student has to consider the plot, the goals of the main character, problems the character(s) faced in achieving the goals, and the solutions to those problems." Both students creatively reflected these considerations in the design of the boards, the game pieces, the objectives, and the directions to their games.

As Long As There Are Mountains Leads to Shelburne Museum Trip

Tutorial Center Field Trip to Shelburne Museum

Last fall, as part of the Vermont Humanities Council's statewide reading program "Vermont Reads," many TTC adult classes joined schools and organizations across Vermont in reading and discussing Natalie Kinsey-Warnock's wonderful As Long As There Are Mountains. For some TTC learners, this was the first novel they had ever read! As we know, reading opens the mind to the world - and what an exciting program this turned into when students said they would be interested in learning more about the traditional farming and country life described in the book by visiting - virtually all for the first time - Shelburne Museum.
